MEETING POINT is inside the main gate by the Royal British Legion Memorial.
Merthyr Dyfan has nearly one hundred and ten casualties from both World Wars. We will visit the private/ Commonwealth memorial of a young Royal Marine who was stationed at a Bastion Fort close to the English Channel that in one night was hit by 78 bombs dropped by the Luftwaffe. We will also visit the site of a young aircraftman who was tragically caught up in the Good Friday Bristol Blitz and how a civilian with exactly the same name also sadly lost his life in the very same air raid.
We will talk about how three French Merchant seamen who's headstones are looked after by the CWGC and how they came to be in Barry and ultimately paid the ultimate sacrifice. We will also with several RAF casualties, Army and Merchant Navy.
Plenty of on-street parking on Cemetery Approach and surrounding streets; on-site facilities including toilets with disability access; good pathways but ground is undulating in places.
Please dress for the weather and wear suitable footwear.
