About this event

Join us for a tour of Lerwick Cemetery.

Our tours are free to the public, but if you would like to support us then please consider donating to our charity The Commonwealth War Graves Foundation (CWGF).

https://foundation.cwgc.org/donate/

MEETING POINT: Inside the gate at the top section of the cemetery, alongside the Cross of Sacrifice .

The tour will tell stories from both wars, including that of David Ernest Hornell, V.C., and also how both conflicts impacted on Shetland.

During the tour you will learn about the history of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and about the heroic actions and self-sacrifice of some of our casualties buried in the cemetery.

There are 42 Commonwealth burials of the 1914-18 war here. There are a further 74 of the 1939-45 war, including 2 unidentified sailors of the Royal Navy and 1 unidentified seaman of the Merchant Navy. There are also 3 Norwegian war burials here.

There is parking nearby. There are hilly and steep slopes. Outdoor clothes and decent footwear advisable.

Please come dressed for the weather and in a suitable walking shoe.

The Commonwealth War Graves Foundation (CWGF) aims to actively engage all communities with the work of the CWGC by telling the inspiring stories through education and outreach projects.

The CWGF is an independent charity registered with the Charity Commission of England and Wales (1171947) and Scotland (SC051982).

Across Britain there are war graves and memorials at over 12,000 locations. From towering and dramatic memorials which bear the names of tens of thousands of missing personnel, to small and intimate local churchyards where perhaps only one service person is commemorated, there is so much to discover.
