About this event
Around the world ordinary people do extraordinary things every day for their community. They do it today, and they did it during the worlds war.
Join us this War Graves Week in a celebration of the remarkable everyday men and women who faced extraordinary times during the world wars and gave their lives for their communities.
MEETING POINT at the war graves plot. On arrival proceed to the right of the chapel and follow the signs on the road towards the crematorium and parking. The drive will take you down the hill to the war graves.
Bath Haycombe Cemetery contains 290 burials of the Second World War, most of them in the war graves plot.
The plot was used by the Royal Air Force as a regional cemetery and contains the graves of airmen serving with the Commonwealth and allied air forces stationed in the south-western counties. Alongside these graves are those of men who served in squadrons of Coastal Command in their work of patrol, searching for U-boats and providing convoy for shipping. Many of the casualties came from the RAF station at Colerne.
Bath suffered heavily from attacks by German aircraft and a severe air raid in April 1942 killed a number of servicemen at home on leave with their families. They are buried with them in the cemetery. In addition to the Commonwealth war graves, the cemetery contains a number of war graves of other nationalities.
There is ample parking available beyond the war grave plots at the crematorium, but please do be aware that services may be taking place. Alternatively parking is available at the chapel by the entrance and the war graves plots are a short 3-4 minute walk down hill.
There are no facilities or toilets; uneven ground; hilly and steep slopes.
Please dress for the weather and wear suitable footwear.
