Overview

An opportunity for students early career researchers to hear from and interact with more experienced professionals.

CWMS is pleased to announce a Careers Event to take place at Warwick University on Friday November 28th. Location: Room IMC004 in the International Manufacturing Centre.

The Event is designed to be an opportunity for students, early career researchers and industrial practitioners to hear from and interact with more experienced professionals including recent graduates as well as more senior leaders.

The Event will begin with a light lunch available from 14:00. Our speakers will then make their presentations with time for questions after each presentation concluding with a more general panel discussion around 17:00.

Our speakers will include:

Dr Martin Marples who will describe his career path from post-graduate research to NAMTEC to the power generation industry where he is now Head of Materials at Arabelle Solutions in Rugby, supporting the delivery of steam turbines and associated equipment to new nuclear power stations including Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C.

Phil Sanger who will describe his career path from his degree in Mechanical Engineering to qualification as UK and European Patent Attorney to his current position as Managing Director at Grey Wolf IP in Leamington Spa. For those engaged in academic or industrial research, he will also touch on questions such as: - How do I protect my invention? - should I keep it secret/patent it/disclose it? • What makes an idea or invention patentable? • Which countries or regions should I cover? • What does it cost? • Who should I approach for help?

Dr Ewan Lordan who will provide perspective from a more recent graduate, describing his path from a degree in Engineering to post-graduate and post-doctoral research before moving into industrial research where he is currently a Subject Matter Expert at JLR.
Sam Goodall, winner of the CWMS Young Person’s Lecture Competition in 2024, who will describe the experience and opportunities gained as a result of his participation in the competition.

Jamie Graham whose wide-ranging career developed from a degree in biological sciences through posts in the health industry to his current role as Membership Development Manager at IOM3, the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. As well as touching on his own career, Jamie will describe the benefits and support to career development offered by IOM3 membership.
