Event description

Description

The cyanotype process was invented in 1842 by Sir John Herschel and it gives a beautiful continuous-tone image of Prussian Blue or cyan. This process can be used to print onto anything made from a natural fibre. Anna Atkins used this method of printing in 1843 to produce photograms of her collection of algae (specifically seaweed), in her first self-published book. This process is great for printmakers, as you can overprint and mix with other processes such as gum, platinum or silk screen. We will be looking at some examples of these and various materials to print on and with, as well as how you can continue on your own at home.

This is an easy and effective way of introducing newcomers to photography, no experience necessary. We will be printing with negatives, acetates, as well as leaves, feathers and lace, etc to produce one-off prints.

FAQs

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

No, but if there is a person under 16 attending, they must be accompanied by an adult, who has also purchased their own ticket for the workshop.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

There are regular buses that take you to Stokes Croft and we are 10mins walk away. You can cycle and we have cycle stations just outside the bulding. If you are driving, parking is free at weekends around the Learning Centre.

What can I bring into the event?

If you have a collection of feathers, lace, leaves or flowers and want to print with those please feel free to bring them along. You may also want to bring an apron to avoid getting any chemicals on your clothing. Although there is a cafe, please feel free to bring a packed lunch or refreshments.

How can I contact the organiser with any questions?

Send any queries to Wendy at stpaulsdarkrooms@gmail.com

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

Yes please.

Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?

Yes, if you have bought a ticket as a gift for someone its fine that the name is different. Be aware that we keep the name of the person purchasing the ticket and the name of the person attending the workshop to inform you of future workshops and events at the darkroom.
