About this event

This workshop offers something a little different from our usual: join us for a one-of-a-kind, limited-edition session that brings together the art of cyanotype with the creative expression of zine-making 👀

Unlike our usual collage zine sessions, this special event in The Cabin invites you to explore the stunning medium of cyanotype printing – a historic photographic process that uses sunlight to produce deep blue images.

With guidance from our special guest, Marina Cyanotypes, you'll learn to compose, expose, and develop your own prints using natural objects, stencils, and/or personal items.

Once your cyanotypes are complete, we’ll guide you through the process of zine-making, transforming your unique prints into a custom, self-published booklet. You will work in two groups of six, each contributing to one of the pages in your collaborative zine, and everyone will get to take a copy home with them on the day!

This workshop is perfect for artists, writers, and creators eager to explore new methods of storytelling and visual artforms. Spaces are limited to 12, so reserve your spot for this unique fusion of light, ink, and DIY publishing before it's too late!

All experience levels are welcome, but please note that we will be handling chemicals as part of the cyanotype process. All materials are provided on the day, but we encourage you to bring along any items you'd like to use as inspiration for your art.

This workshop is longer than our typical monthly offering, due to the development and drying time needed for the cyanotypes. There will be a 30 minute break where you can relax with a cup or tea or coffee, chat with fellow participants, and mutually admire your progress.

We are releasing a range of ticket price options in the hope that everyone will be able to take part. There are a limited number of each ticket option available, therefore we kindly ask that you do an honest assessment of your affordability to ensure the intended equal access.

Here's a guide to help inform your choice:

Frequently asked questions

What is cyanotype?

Cyanotype is a historic photographic process discovered in 1842, using UV light to create deep blue prints. Often used for botanical art, it involves coating paper with chemicals, arranging objects, and exposing them to sunlight for stunning, silhouetted images.

Is cyanotype safe for beginners?

Cyanotype is safe when proper care is taken, and Marina will be there to guide you every step of the way. Chemicals used are low-toxicity, and gloves will be used during the session. Prints are non-toxic and safe to handle when dry, so cyanotype is a safe and beginner-friendly art form.

Do I need prior experience to participate?

All experience levels are welcome, but please note that we will be handling chemicals as part of the cyanotype process. Our aim is always to guide you gently through the process, ensuring a pressure-free environment where you can fully immerse into your creative flow.

Do I need to bring any materials along with me?

All materials are provided on the day, but we encourage you to bring along any items you'd like to use as inspiration for your art. If you have any pressed flowers or leaves, we recommend bringing these for some stunning botanical-themed results.

What is your refund policy?

Unfortunately all tickets for this event are non-refundable. This is due to limited numbers within the space and to help us cover running costs. If you can no longer attend, please let us know in advance so we can offer up the space to someone on the waiting list.
