Event description

Description

The Cyberselves project, funded by the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council, seeks to explore the transformative impacts of immersive technologies, including virtual reality and telepresence, on our workplaces, societies and cultures. Led by researchers from Sheffield Robotics the project will collaborate with a wide cross-section of the public, academia, industrial partners, educators and policymakers.

Our first workshop will bring together academics, industry and users to better understand the issues of teleoperation (i.e. the remote control of robots) and telepresence (i.e. the sense of being elsewhere). The goal of the workshop will be to understand the state-of-the-art, and to scope out expected future developments, with particular focus on the psychological, societal and cultural impacts of these technologies.

The format of the event will include talks, discussions, and brainstorming activities, and hands-on demonstrations of telepresence/teleoperative technologies. Outcomes of the workshop will include a white-paper, to be published by the EPSRC UK RAS Network (TBC) that we intend to take forward to influence ethics, policy and industry standards.
