What to expect?
This is a beginner to intermediate class for anyone who is interested in using the facilities at Cycle Kitchen. Our Cycle Kitchen is a community-driven DIY workshop space in Meadowbank where people can share their knowledge about cycle maintenance, repair, and building. We talk about cycles rather than bicycles or bikes, just for that little extra emphasis to let you know we love all types of human powered wheeled machines. This class is for anyone interested to learn how to fix their own cycle, and who would like a slightly more structured orientation to the space.
The session will introduce you to the possibilities of what you can do at Cycle Kitchen. We’ll introduce you to our extensive tool collection and all the things you can do on your own, from cleaning and maintaining your drivetrain to replacing your bottom bracket, servicing bearings, adjusting a bent mech hanger and truing wheels. We’ll also give you tips and guidance on how to figure things out yourself - using for example the Park Tool Big Blue Book of Bicycle Repair and the ever-helpful YouTube. If you’re used to taking your bike to the shop every time something goes wrong, or you’ve been thinking about building a bike or restoring an old one but never quite got around to it, this is the class to get you started. If you would want a welcoming space with friendly volunteers who could assist with some basic wheelchair maintenance, please come along.
Bringing a bike is not required, but if you have a project that you want to work on, bring it along and we’ll help you figure out what needs fixing and get started working on it.
We’ll cover:
- all the things you can do with the tools at Cycle Kitchen
- diagnosing basic problems with your bike/wheelchair and learning how to fix them yourself if possible and safe
- getting you started on a next project if you have one
ETL members and non-members welcome!

The session will take place in the ETL Meadowbank Hub, 121 Lawrie Reilly Place, EH7 5GS.
