Event description
National Standard Cycle training for members of Clitheroe Bike Library are now taking place using our socially distanced training strategy!

About this Event

Members of Clitheroe bike library can now take advantage of their National Standard Cycle training.

If you are not already a member, please visit www.breakingcyclescic.org to download and complete our service user agreement. Membership costs £65 but we have some funded places, courtesy of Connecting east Lancashire, available for people aged 16+ living and/or working in the Ribble Valley.

Our commitment to reducing the risk of spreading Covid-19 involves the following measures:

• Making course content available in an online format where possible

• Reduced group sizes

• Conducting face to face training as 1 continuous session

• Asking you to use your own equipment where possible

• Taking measures to properly clean any equipment we lend out

• Asking that people who are clinically vulnerable, or living with someone who is, remain at home. This won't affect your entitlement to a funded place!

This training aims to help people to access cycling safely and include as many people as possible. Riders should already have the ability to get on and off a bicycle, ride in a controlled manner and be able to bring a bike to a safe stop. Although there is no minimum fitness requirement, please be prepared to ride at a gentle to moderate level for approximately 70% of the sessions, we will stop and rest as and when needed.

During this training, you will...

Access a short online tutorial which outlines how to plan and prepare for a cycle journey before or after physically attending the course. This will involve watching short video clips and completing a short quiz demonstrating that you have understood the concepts.

Participating in a short (Level 1) traffic free session, which introduces the key concepts of the National Standard in a safe environment before gaining skills, experience and confidence riding on the road.

Ride independently and as a small group (4 riders) on the road as we develop an understanding of riding strategies from the National Standard that help us to safely share the road with other road users. This will involve road positioning, negotiating junctions, understanding signals, signs and road markings, communicating with other road users, responding to potential hazards and developing safe riding strategies. This session will progress riders develop more confidence, taking riders from a level 2 standard to level 3 as we navigate faster, busier roads with more complex infrastructure such as roundabouts, traffic lights etc.
