CyNam 21.2 - Smart Cyber: Securing the IoT and the cities of the future (Live Broadcast event)

About this event

We're back for our summer headline event, this time in partnership with the Cheltenham Science Festival. CyNam 21.2 will explore securing the Internet of Things and how cyber innovation can enable the smart cities of the future.

This event will have something for everyone, so whether you're in the industry, a career changer, student or just interested in the cyber and digital worlds, this event is for you!

CyNam 21.2 will feature headline sessions and breakout discussions for you to get involved with, these include:

Keynote Talks and Panel Sessions Include:

  • What Does a Welcoming and Trusting Smart City Look Like? Join Professor Lizzie Coles-Kemp and look at what we should expect from an approach to digital security that is fundamental to the design of civic spaces
  • How to Build a Citizen Centred Smart City: Privacy, Resilience, Sustainability & Wellbeing: We are joined by an expert panel from Field Effect, IBM, Oxford University and the University of Bristol to answer questions surrounding smart cities, sustainability, community living and smart technology- discussing potential solutions that are already taking place in our towns and cities in the UK and across the world
  • The Future of Cars: Are We Safe?: Included in this session, Sophia McCall from Ladies of Cheltenham Hacking Society will be an analysis of driverless technologies as well as vehicle-to-everything (V2X) smart city communications, and how the integration of these technologies could increase the security risk within the automotive threat landscape of the future
  • What Makes a Smart City Smart: Join CGI's Senior Consultant in Emerging Technologies for their headline event session and explore what makes a city smart? We’ve all heard the phrase Smart City but what does it actually mean? Will you benefit or is this something that only benefits the councils/governments? Are there any controls/regulations in place to ensure that such a total inclusion of IT solutions in daily life is proportional to the benefits delivered?
  • Student Showcase- Technology Sustainability Expert, Karen Spenley CEng talks to future technologists about their opinions on how technology can help/hinder the future of people and the planet. We welcome four students from around the area to share their views on the ever critical subject of climate change, resources and sustainability and it’s relationship with technology

Breakout Discussions Lead By:

  • CGI: Smart Cities, Head to Head- This discussion from CGI will be a “Presidential Debate”, diving into the world of smart cities and connected communities
  • Field Effect: Mitigating Risk in the Smart Office- With an estimated 45% of cyber-attacks aimed at Small & Medium businesses, how can they effectively monitor and protect staff, their cloud services, network, endpoint and IOT devices?
  • IBM: Securing Smarter Cities- Within this breakout session, IBM will propose an approach that would enable a Smarter City to bring together the many key stakeholders across city and local government and industry that need to collaborate to protect the city and its citizens
  • Plexal: Connecting Cyber Clusters Across The UK- In this session Plexal explores how start-ups can work with large organisations to accelerate co-creation and address key industry challenges. We will hear from three start-ups from across the UK cyber ecosystem
  • Ladies of Cheltenham Hacking Society: Afternoon tea with the Ladies of Cheltenham Hacking Society- The Ladies of Cheltenham literally "spill the tea" about their experiences of their careers in the cyber/ tech industry. With helpful hints and tips for anyone aspiring to break into coding, tech and cyber security - our favourite cyber sisters have got your back. Bring your own biscuits!

Cyber Showcases:

  • Configured Things: Configured Things specialises in building technologies that enable secure connected places. Places such as cities, venues & buildings are often shared spaces, formed of multiple co-operating and potentially competing entities. Yet existing solutions treat connected places as having a single owner – our platform differs by providing a policy-based approach to connecting organisations, federating their systems and data in a controlled manner
  • Awen Collective: Awen Collective is making society safer by increasing resiliency against cyber attacks within a variety of industrial sectors, including energy, water, transportation, manufacturing and smart cities. Awen does this by creating software products specifically built for Operational Technologies (OT) and Industrial IoT (IIoT), and with industrial engineering processes in mind
  • ANGOKA: ANGOKA is an IoT security company focused on protecting M2M communications for Smart Cities and Mobility and offering solutions that protect devices’ identities. With an increase of inherently insecure networks coming online with the boom of IoT, ANGOKA’s solutions safeguard critical machine-to-machine communication integrity and data provenance, creating trusted connections, even in untrustworthy networks
  • Cyber Defence Service: The Cyber Defence Service provides specialist capability development. They support the most critical organisations in the UK, the wider public sector, military, law enforcement, industry, as well as SME's. They specialise in the Cyber and Electromagnetic environment, providing real-time analysis and exposure of the invisible battlespace. Over the last few years, they have performed research and development tasks for many organisations, and the team behind this work have extensive experience of developing hardware and software solutions for cellular, IoT, networking and cybersecurity
  • Ioetec: Ioetec is a cyber company that specialises in securing the value of data generated by IoT devices. With Ioetec’s industry leading solution, device manufactures can quickly and easily implement secure communications for their connected devices. Designed for Smart City, Industrial 4.0. and large scale infrastructure, adopters can operate in an assured data environment with trusted, true end to end data security
