About this event
We're back for our summer headline event, this time in partnership with the Cheltenham Science Festival. CyNam 21.2 will explore securing the Internet of Things and how cyber innovation can enable the smart cities of the future.
This event will have something for everyone, so whether you're in the industry, a career changer, student or just interested in the cyber and digital worlds, this event is for you!
CyNam 21.2 will feature headline sessions and breakout discussions for you to get involved with, these include:
Keynote Talks and Panel Sessions Include:
- What Does a Welcoming and Trusting Smart City Look Like? Join Professor Lizzie Coles-Kemp and look at what we should expect from an approach to digital security that is fundamental to the design of civic spaces
- How to Build a Citizen Centred Smart City: Privacy, Resilience, Sustainability & Wellbeing: We are joined by an expert panel from Field Effect, IBM, Oxford University and the University of Bristol to answer questions surrounding smart cities, sustainability, community living and smart technology- discussing potential solutions that are already taking place in our towns and cities in the UK and across the world
- The Future of Cars: Are We Safe?: Included in this session, Sophia McCall from Ladies of Cheltenham Hacking Society will be an analysis of driverless technologies as well as vehicle-to-everything (V2X) smart city communications, and how the integration of these technologies could increase the security risk within the automotive threat landscape of the future
- What Makes a Smart City Smart: Join CGI's Senior Consultant in Emerging Technologies for their headline event session and explore what makes a city smart? We’ve all heard the phrase Smart City but what does it actually mean? Will you benefit or is this something that only benefits the councils/governments? Are there any controls/regulations in place to ensure that such a total inclusion of IT solutions in daily life is proportional to the benefits delivered?
- Student Showcase- Technology Sustainability Expert, Karen Spenley CEng talks to future technologists about their opinions on how technology can help/hinder the future of people and the planet. We welcome four students from around the area to share their views on the ever critical subject of climate change, resources and sustainability and it’s relationship with technology

- Awen Collective: Awen Collective is making society safer by increasing resiliency against cyber attacks within a variety of industrial sectors, including energy, water, transportation, manufacturing and smart cities. Awen does this by creating software products specifically built for Operational Technologies (OT) and Industrial IoT (IIoT), and with industrial engineering processes in mind
- ANGOKA: ANGOKA is an IoT security company focused on protecting M2M communications for Smart Cities and Mobility and offering solutions that protect devices’ identities. With an increase of inherently insecure networks coming online with the boom of IoT, ANGOKA’s solutions safeguard critical machine-to-machine communication integrity and data provenance, creating trusted connections, even in untrustworthy networks
- Cyber Defence Service: The Cyber Defence Service provides specialist capability development. They support the most critical organisations in the UK, the wider public sector, military, law enforcement, industry, as well as SME's.
