This free practical Children and Young People’s Mental Wellbeing Awareness Training is open to the wider public health workforce in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland:

"Any individual who is not a specialist or practitioner in public health but has the opportunity or ability to positively impact health and wellbeing through their (paid or unpaid) work." (CfWI and RSPH, 2015)

Specifically, those roles that have an active degree of engagement in public health; an opportunity to influence the peers and family around a child or young person; and direct repeat contact with children and young people considered at risk of poor mental wellbeing. This includes those individuals working in:

•› Education;

•› Police for example, those that respond to health protection incidents, domestic abuse incidents and those based in youth justice; and

•› Local authority children’s services for example, housing officers, social workers, youth workers.

With content informed by the Public Mental Health Content Guide for introductory courses in mental health and wellbeing, this locality-based multi-agency training will support attendees to adopt a public health mindset with greater appreciation of how their work can make a difference to children and young people’s mental wellbeing.

Core Principles to be addressed in the training:

  1. Know the nature and dimensions of mental health and mental illness.

  2. Know the determinants at a structural, community and individual level.

  3. Know how mental health is a positive asset and resource to society.

  4. Know what works to improve mental health and prevent mental illness within your own area of work.

  5. Understand your own mental health, what influences it, its impact on others and how you can improve it.

  6. Understand the impact of childhood experiences, including trauma, on adult mental health.

  7. Recognise discrimination against people experiencing mental illness.

  8. Communicate effectively with children and young people about mental health.

  9. Integrate mental health into your own area of work and address mental and physical health holistically.

  10. Support people who disclose lived experience of mental illness.

Please note that lunch will not be provided. However, refreshments will be available throughout the day.

There are six free one-day training sessions being delivered across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland during Q1 2019; please ensure you book onto the session that is closest to your working locality.

Outcomes and findings from this innovation project will be shared with the funder Health Education England and the local Future in Mind partnership to build a greater understanding of workforce training needs and demonstrate the validity of the training model.

We will only hold your details supplied in this booking for as long as necessary. We collect your details for the purposes of registration on the day of the training, so we can get in touch about the training session, to follow up with you after the session about your experiences and to circulate any supporting materials as agreed within the session. Anonymised summary information will be collated and analysed to understand who (the roles and organisations) that accessed our training.

Images and footage may be taken at the event for the sole purpose of evidencing the delivery of the training sessions to the funder (Health Education England) in the form of an evaluation report. Images and footage will be deleted following the stated purpose. If you would prefer not to be photographed or filmed, please inform the trainer on the morning of the training session.
