Description

AGENTS OF SOCIAL CHANGE OR AGENTS OF SOCIAL CONTROL?

The last decade has seen a changing political landscape with successive governments contributing to a drastic reduction of funds, but also to sacrifices at the heart of youth work and play work, to a dilution of the work, and to the loss of its identity. Universal youth and play services have fast disappeared in the face of austerity and a preference for the targeted agenda with many services have been incorporated into the auspices of Integrated Youth Support Services where youth work skills are utilised as tools for reducing anti-social behaviour, increasing employability or delivering the Prevent agenda.

Are we agents of social change, shifting attitudes, values, and actions to not only address social problems in a positive way through a relationship of choice, but as political educators, and as a social force or are we now only able to create the ‘right’ social attitudes amongst children and young people using our professional skills as an effective means of social control?

This three day event is open to branch delegates and individual members wishing to attend and will provide delegates with an excellent opportunity to discuss and debate the key issues and challenges faced by youth work and playwork professionals on the frontline in delivering high quality services for children and young people.

Our CYPW section AGM will be held on Friday afternoon, and will focus on union internal business including policy motions, committee reports and committee elections with all sessions on Saturday and Sunday being focused on industrial, occupational and professional issues, through a mixture of training and professional development opportunities delivered via a range of workshops, plenaries, and expert panels.

The event will provide delegates with an excellent opportunity to discuss and debate the key issues and challenges faced across the children's and young people's sector and we are creating a programme geared to advancing the occupational and professional development of those working with children and young people with training that will be CPD accredited.

Secure your place now with a low deposit and pay the balance by Friday 3rd November 2017. Cheques made payable to 'Unite the Union ' will be accepted during registration. Deposits will be non- refundable unless a replacement delegate can be identified.

Residential Delegate Places - Fri 3rd - Sun 5th November £260 (Deposit £50)

Non Residential Places - £75 (Deposit £25) for the Fri 3rd - Sun 5th November and includes refreshments and lunch where served. (Evening meals are charged extra).
