About this event

If you have never attended a Kickstart Your Business workshop before, please fill out the registration form in advance of the session. This form is crucial for our funding purposes (more detail below). 

 

Delivered by the Reference Team at the British Library. 

Intellectual property and its protection is vital for anyone with a business idea. This all-day workshop will help you understand the multiple areas of intellectual property and their relevance to your business, as well as provide you with practical tips on how to utilise the BIPC’s resources to protect, research and develop your business idea. By the end of the session you will understand and identify the importance of intellectual property in your own business and know the next steps to protect it. 

 

‘Business Research and Information’ (AM) will cover: 

• The fundamentals of using the BIPC’s and your library’s resources to develop a strategic roadmap for your business 

• Introduction to databases, industry guides, external resources list, internet and library resources 

• Value Proposition: trend, values, sustainability, wider issues 

• Customer Segmentation: market research and customer discovery and understanding 

• Partnership: company data and competitors 

• Key Resources: research my IP and funding streams 

• Help you make informed business decisions, plan and offer value to your customer 

 

‘How to Protect my Business Idea’ (PM) will cover: 

• Introduce the four areas of intellectual property (IP) – patents, trademarks, registered designs and copyright 

• Help you understand which areas may apply to you and your business 

• Examples of everyday IP in our lives 

• A deeper dive into IP: time limits, registered or unregistered and other practical examples 

 

About your facilitators 

Gail Mitchell is a Business & IP Specialist at the Business & IP Centre (BIPC) at the British Library. Gail has worked for the BIPC for many years, helping customers with their research and reference, as well as delivering workshops, one-to-one advice clinics and project work to businesses related to the services and resources held in the Business & IP Centre. 

Julie Boadilla is a Business & IP Specialist at the Business & IP Centre (BIPC) at the British Library. Julie has worked for the BIPC for many years, helping customers with their research and reference, as well as delivering workshops, one-to-one advice clinics and project work to businesses related to the services and resources held in the Business & IP Centre.

Workshop timings

This is a 4 hour full-day workshop which takes place in person. Do arrive promptly before the start of the session to make full use of the support available. There will be comfort breaks, and a lunch break to space out the day. If you have any queries, please contact bipcldn@bl.uk

Eligibility

To take part in the Kickstart Your Business workshops; You should be an aspiring entrepreneur with a business idea you want to develop in London. OR The owner of a business which has been registered at Companies House or a Sole trader based in London.

The Kickstart Your Business workshops are:

  • "Business Research and Information': Protecting what your business does and creates is key to creating value. In this interactive workshop on Intellectual Property, you’ll learn the practical steps you need to take to own and defend new inventions, products and brands. Topics include all you need to know about patents, designs, trademarks and copyright. This workshop also covers the fundamentals of using the BIPC’s and your library’s resources to develop a strategic roadmap for your business. You will be introduced to concepts like the Value Proposition and to tools like the Business Model Canvas, to help you make informed business decisions, plan and offer value to your customer.
  • 'Get Started': In this high energy and practical workshop, you will find out how to set up your business and avoid common start-up pitfalls. By the end of the day, you will have the skills, knowledge and confidence to complete a one page business plan.

The project is funded by the British Library, five participating London boroughs and generously supported by JP Morgan.
