Careers Week - Dads4Daughters Evening Event – 15th March 2017

Our Launch Event

The event will begin with an analysis, led by our UVI Further Maths students, of the data from the Survey and implicit bias test sent to Staff, Parents and Alumni, during which there will be an opportunity for parents and students to discuss and share their own experiences of managing gender issues in the workplace. This will be followed by a talk and Q+A with Gaenor Bagley, formerly Head of People and currently Leader of Corporate Purpose at PWC, who will discuss her experience of trying to build the number of women at senior levels in the workplace. The evening will close with an exciting Dads (and Mums) vs Daughter Quiz, in which we’ll find out just how well we know one another!

Dads4Daughters

Dads4Daughters is a campaign inspired by the United Nations #HeForShe initiative, in which men and fathers are encouraged to play an active role in pursuing meaningful workplace equality. The initiative aims to engage men, women and young people in a positive conversation about the practical steps that can be taken, and indeed the problems we face, in furthering workplace equality. We would like to assure all parents that this will be a positive and practical conversation informed by anonymous polls and led by both our students and our guest speaker. There will be no ‘men bashing’ and no one will be put on the spot!

The Data

The Dads4Daughters Test (linked above) is designed to reveal both unconscious gender biases and compare them to the participant’s own expectations of their attitudes towards the different genders. Using an affective priming approach, the test requires the participant to categorise gendered words (for instance ‘he’, ‘she’, ‘his, ‘hers’) to male or female. The next two sections then introduce primer words (such as ‘leader’ or ‘bossy’) before, for instance, ‘his’ to see if the prime word affects that user’s response time to the original gendered word.

Based on the individual’s Dads4Daughters Test results, the participant then will be given a choice of three constructive pledges they could take based on their most ‘biased’ area (from professions, roles, education or personal qualities)

In addition, we would be very appreciative if parents could also complete our own FHS Workplace Equality Questionnaire at LINK The responses to this anonymous survey will form the basis of our UVI students’ analysis and provide the stimulus and direction to our discussion.

The event will take place from 6:45pm to 8:30pm in the Senior Hall, with drinks and canapés available from 6:45pm.
