Daily George Orwell

Usually we think about George Orwell as a writer fixated on the largest political and cultural questions of his (and our) time. In this talk, Nathan Waddell looks at a different figure: the Orwell fascinated by the everyday, and who saw in daily spaces and situations the threads of power. From waking and bathing to breakfast, work, lunch, the pub, sleep and dreaming, Orwell was never dulled to the routines of living and stayed alert not only to their traumas but also to their wonders and magic.

Nathan Waddell is a Professor of Twentieth-Century Literature at the University of Birmingham. He’s the author of A Bright Cold Day: The Wonder of George Orwell (2025) and other books on literary modernism and twentieth-century popular fiction.
