Event description

Description

Doors open at 14:00, show begins at 14:30

Enjoy an afternoon of classical dance and music from the South of India. Engage with stories of the indomitable human spirit and enchanting tales of gods and demons told through the lively yet ancient dance form of Bharatanatyam. Immerse yourself in the intricate rhythms and soul-stirring melodies of Carnatic Music.

Dakshina, which means both ‘an offering’ and ‘South’ is our endeavor to offer a small platter of South Indian culture to Cambridge.

About Bharathanatyam

Bharatanatyam is one of the oldest classical dances of India, originating over 2000 years ago in South India. We will showcase pieces that highlight the spectrum of possibility with Bharatanatyam incorporating fast, rhythmic movements and intricate hand gestures and expressions of stories from Hindu mythology.

Who are we?

Samarpana Classical Arts is a multi award winning team that began in 2014 as a grassroots group of dedicated artists who share their love for the Indian classical arts. We believe the myriad of beautiful music and dance from the culturally-rich Southern Indian states should be seen, listened to and enjoyed by all. We perform regularly in Cambridgeshire, notably at the Big Weekend every year and were invited to perform at the reception for the Mayor of Cambridge in 2019. Samarpana has been widely acclaimed and have won the global IndianRaga Festival 2019 and were crowned as champions in 2020.

Cambridge Carnatic is a group of musicians in and around Cambridge who play Carnatic music, the classical music tradition of South India, which is rooted in the concepts of raaga (melodic framework) and taala (rhythmic framework). A treasure trove of ancient compositions and a host of improvisation techniques encapsulate Carnatic music’s lyrical, melodic and rhythmic richness; we look forward to showcasing many such captivating facets of classical Indian music. We aim to spread awareness and enjoyment of this art form in Cambridge showcased by both our members and by hosting visiting artists. Cambridge Carnatic contribute enthusiastically to local community events (Big Weekend, college concerts) and feature this year’s winner of the Indian Raga London 2020 Advanced Instrumental Music competition.
