Description

9.15-9.30 Welcome and registration. Aims of the day shared and timetable discussed. Sign up for workshops.

Refreshments on arrival.

9.30-10.30 Workshop rotation 1. Staff choose from one of the workshops below:

Feedback and Questioning: This workshop aims to share best practice with regards to feedback and questioning to stretch and challenge students of all abilities. Practical and easily adaptable ideas for the classroom will be demonstrated and discussed.

Using exemplar answers to maximise progress: This workshop will be designed to develop practice with using exemplar answers in History and Geography at KS4 and 5.

Staff will demonstrate how these answers have been used to assist students with improving their own work through the annotation, highlighting and marking of other examples of work. Through attendance to this workshop, DALP staff will be able to participate in activities which they can then apply to their own practice.

Lower and Middle Ability Stretch: Focused on developing teachers’ awareness of and strategies to employ when providing stretch and challenge to 'middle' and 'low' ability students in the Humanities. This will cover the subject areas of History, Geography and RE. Currently we are considering covering the following areas; accessing key terms and vocabulary, developing the detail in answering questions at GCSE and developing student’s ability to unpack questions at GCSE.

Low-stakes testing: With the strengthening of the curriculum in all Humanities subjects there is a requirement for students to retain more knowledge. The shear amount of new information is gargantuan so students need it drip feeding into them regularly. Online testing is one of the most accessible and least labour intensive ways of doing this. Furthermore, it has the potential for that teaching panacea of being high impact and not at all labour intensive. At Holgate, Humanities are moving towards using Quizizz with all students to try and engage them in the process and more importantly find the holes in their knowledge from which we can analyse and act on. Online quizzes can be a powerful tool and have the potential to make a difference if we look at their potential beyond our individual schools across DALP. In this session we will show you how we are using them at Holgate in both History and Geography from 11-18, and the impact they have had in a short period of time on student outcomes.

Stretch and Challenge Activities

Direct Instruction: effective teacher talk: Direct instruction puts forward the argument that the most effective way to teach students is by explicit instruction and guided practice. Against a backdrop of time constraints and increasingly content driven GCSE specifications, the workshop will explore how this can be used to effectively drive progress in Humanities.
