MARYHILL PEDAL POWER
Connecting Cycling, Energy and Waste

Hi all! Studio Pop invite you to join Maryhill Pedal Power, an energizing ride along the towpath of Forth and Clyde Canal in Glasgow. Everybody is welcome!

Maryhill Pedal Power is a cycling initiative to promote the remake culture in Maryhill along the Forth and Clyde Canal. It aims to engage children, youth and families with utility cycling as a means of everyday healthy transport, waste collection and outdoor sport. It links everyday stories built around the world of cycling, energy and waste promoting the use of bicycles creatively. To become a member is easy. Participants will enter friendly inductions, workshops and competitions getting rewards.

MARYHILL PEDAL POWER counts with the support of National Lottery Awards for All Scotland, SportScotland and Creative Scotland and powered by Studio Pop and partner organisations. This initiative is held at the DOT TO DOT Maryhill Station www.dots.scot to develop a creative and inclusive outdoor programme, which is part of the remake framework REPLASTICO Energizing (Re)cycling led by Studio Pop.

Maryhill Pedal Power team invites all participants to ideate, build and play together, converting KCal to Kw; and learning about remaking. In doing so, we will design and experiment with DIY bike trailers and locally assembled cargo bikes that will be used to collect plastic waste along the Canal, creating new products made with reused plastics.

Maryhill Pedal Power wants to reach all bicycle lovers. The events engage with distinctive themes around (re)cycling culture, including excursions and competitions along the Canal. They are inclusive and open-access, aiming to engage with all age groups and levels of ability, making a special effort to encourage girls and young groups to participate in these workshops.

Metabolic energy will be transformed into electricity through dynamos and stored in portable batteries in bikes. Every pedaled mile is converted from Kcal to Kw, with energy measurement providing an instant report of your physical efforts. To secure a high utility cycling and allow usage for all, we will install innovative cycle technology such adjustable power meters for cyclist; dynamos; batteries; electric bikes systems; LED wheels; or brakes and gears to improve the riding safety.

Maryhill Pedal Power will help us to develop our remake community by picking up reusable plastic waste from households, shops or Canal embankment and delivering them to our collection point thus providing incentives for people to embrace the culture of remaking. It’s about raising awareness about how much plastic has penetrated in our society and how to reuse plastic creatively. If participants give plastics in kind, we reward them with points, which they can exchange for REPLASTICO items www.replastico.com.

It’s important to us that you involve community in the design, development and delivery of our planned programme to be more successful as common result. We invite you to join the community involvement session of “Maryhill Pedal Power” on Saturday 24 March at 11.00. Let us know if you are interested in giving a hand in these activities and would like to donating used bikes for this project.
