Event description
This discussion and design development pottery workshop will teach you how to produce decorative cowlings to minimise light pollution.

About this Event

This is a discussion and design development workshop leading to a hands-on practical making session led by local makers Tom Philipson and Adam Sutherland. The ambition will be to produce simple decorative cowlings to minimise light pollution from domestic outdoor lighting, including security timer lights. Easily fitted using domestic power tools, light cowlings are a cost-effective and practical solution to tackling light pollution, redirecting excess light from spilling into the night sky to better light your property’s walkways and frontage.

During the workshop, you will work through the process of designing and making decorative cowls to fit your own domestic lights while also developing a product that can be offered throughout the Coniston valley to private and public buildings suffering from the problem. Engaging woodwork, pottery and other DIY making techniques, the finished product will be a design led solution that reduces light pollution at night but is also pleasingly decorative during daylight hours.

It is hoped that from these workshops we will form a group that are able to offer a light pollution management service and product that could be offered more widely.

Advance booking is essential.

No previous experience necessary. All materials and a home-cooked lunch included.

If you would like to know more about the project please contact Emma Sumner (emma@grizedale.org | 07930 651889).
