Event description

Description

Darren Cannan's poetry reflects on what John Updike often explored in his writing, looking at finding something magical in the mundane. He believes there is something beautiful, necessary and important to be found in the everyday.

Darren's work takes in folklore, cultural curiosities, hearsay, geography, history; an exploration of Britain not defined by traditional hierarchies, intolerance and deference, but by human stories braided with warmth, love, loss, magic and melancholy. He writes vignettes about shifting industrial and rural landscapes, observing how these changes can be traced in people and buildings.

His writing has centred on his native West Midlands, as his 2015 poetry and music collaboration with Birmingham folk singer/song writer James Summerfield, called Analogue Tales, shows, but he also writes in wider terms about the blurred lines he sees in an imaginary and real Britain.
