Event description

Description

This major fundraising event, in its second year, is an ultra running race, whereby the entrants determine their own route from the start point with the aim to achieve the furthest distance (as the crow flies) in a given time.

There are 2 categories, a 12 hour 'Delinquent' and 24 hour 'Felon' cut off. Whilst individual route choice is very much a part of the event it will be controlled in terms of restricted to only using public rights of way so no tunnelling, building gliders or running through the Moor's bird nesting grounds (more on that with the joining instructions!)

Escapees will be monitored for the full duration of the event by a GPS tracker device and associated software for the Race Director. This system allows continuous participant tracking and location and the facility for participants to operate an emergency button. Friends and family can monitor progress of individual participants at http://racedrone.net/event/dartmoor-prison-break

Although this fantastic event will naturally attract experienced ultra runners from across the UK, we invite individuals and groups of friends to take part as a personal challenge. Maybe you can run (or walk very quickly) home to Plymouth, Bodmin or Exeter, or handcuff yourself to your best friend and make good your escape in unison!

Medals for all participants will be given, as will a custom t-shirt. A prize will be offered to the individual who makes it the furthest distance for both events.

Safety

The runners are responsible for their own support and are encouraged to arrange their own support crew (this is common for these event types and the participants will be expecting to do this.)

Race Control will maintain a constant watch utilising the GPS trackers and will monitor progress and be able to interrogate any issues raised by the GPS tracking system. Each entrant will have to carry a mobile phone and provide the number to race control along with contact numbers for support crew and a further number for a remote contact not at the event. This will allow race control to take any swift action and contact support teams to verify runner situations or assist with any problems.

DSRTP will provide a medical team from race control who will be able to respond to incidents close to the start. For any emergency incidents beyond the immediate vicinity Race control will ensure appropriate emergency service resources (Possibly with DSRTP team support) are mobilised to the runner location. Runners will need to pre-declare any medical conditions.

Minimum age for participants is 18 years.

There will be a mandatory kit list for all entrants, including:

  1. Waterproof jacket with taped seams
  2. Waterproof trousers with taped seams
  3. Head torch with spare batteries
  4. Mobile phone
  5. Compass and relevant maps
  6. Whistle
  7. Water bottles or bladder
  8. Hat
  9. Gloves
  10. Spare base layer long sleeve top
  11. Emergency food
  12. Emergency foil blanket
  13. First aid kit

There will be a mandatory pre-race equipment check.

Teams

Prisoners are welcome to escape together but all entries are individual and the mandatory kit applies to all individuals. In order to keep things simple there will be no 'Team' entries this year.

Cost

Competitively priced with other similar Ultra Events, there are substantial costs to the team for event management, and insurance. Costs also include individual trackers assigned to each participant (to be mailed back to the 3rd party issuer of the trackers on completion) as well as t-shirts, medals and prizes. All remaining surplus monies raised will be used by Dartmoor Search & Rescue Team Plymouth to support their life-saving work.

Registered Charity Number: 1106095

FAQs

1. Are we expected to return to the start after the event to collect medals etc?
No, due to the logistics of the event medals and t-shirts will be issued at the event start. Other prizes will be sent by post after the event.

2. What do we do with our trackers after the event?
These will be the responsibility of the participant to post back to the supplier.
Each runner will be responsible for returning the trackers as detailed on the joining instructions. Du to the nature of the trackers each runner will be responsible for the safe return to Racedrone by the required post race date, failure to do so will incur a further charge (further instructions will be provided with joining instructions.)

3. What safety cover is available?
The primary safety cover and support for each runner will come from their own nominated support crew. DSRT Plymouth will provide safety teams for calls near to the start. For calls further afield the appropriate emergency service will be mobilised with possible DSRT Plymouth support. If the emergency button on the tracker is activated 999 will be called by race control for appropriate support to be mobilised to your location.

4. How does the tracker work?
The tracker works by GPS and will be constantly monitored by race control. The tracker will be attached to your bag at race registration and should not be moved. There is an emergency button function that should only be activated in an emergency/immediate assistance needed. If this button is activated we will call 999. Friends and family can follow your progress at http://racedrone.net/event/dartmoor-prison-break

5. What if I push the emergency button on the tracker by accident?
The tracker is designed so that this doesn't happen. If by chance the tracker is activated by accident contact race control immediately and we can halt any emergency assistance.

6. Does each individual have to carry the mandatory kit list?
Yes, this is to ensure safety of each single participant, even if escaping with other prisoners.

7. Is there car parking at the start?
Yes, there will be ample parking at the start however, this is only for the start of the race. If you wish to leave a vehicle in Princetown you will need to park on the village or visitor centre carpark. A small parking fee applies.

8. Is this a race or can I got at my own pace?
Of course, this is a personal challenge. Many will consider it a competition which of course we welcome. Some will simply aim perhaps to make it home to Plymouth or Exeter in 12 or 24 hours which is enough of a challenge for most folk! Therefore, we encourage all participants to enjoy escaping at whatever pace they are happy with!

9. Am I a 'felon' or a 'delinquent'?
Well, from the booking system it would appear that there are considerably more delinquents than felons but we find that hard to believe.
