Geospatial data is all around us. Used for everything from ensuring your parcels are delivered securely, to tracking changes in landscapes and environments, it refers to data tied to a specific geographic location.
Join us for the Data & AI Meetup as we explore two fascinating applications of geospatial data:
Marked:
Marked helps cities and local authorities unlock cycling's full potential by clearly mapping and promoting the safest cycling routes and infrastructure through colour-coded, numbered and lettered signage. The approach supports behaviour change while reducing the barriers to cycling and helps transport bodies to ensure cycling is a viable, everyday mode of transport.
The Workers' Observatory - Geo-tracked Riders and Counter-Data: An Experiment in Platform Worker Data Science
Platform-mediated gig work such as food delivery and on-demand driving is widely known to be exploitative. Conditions have continually deteriorated with the introduction of AI-managed fares (dynamic pricing) and increasingly sophisticated surveillance. This includes live GPS tracking of riders to calculate delays, AI-deduced suspicion of combined work, and AI-expedited decisions to impose sanctions. Apps progressively aggregate incredibly granular geospatial data about the cities they operate in and how riders navigate them. Once the apps reach a level of market dominance, they turn this data – both the urban grid and the live-tracking – into intensely disciplining AI tools.
The team from the Workers’ Observatory will share how worker’s efforts to understand the effects of geospatial data gathering provided the opportunity for community-building, the development of common cause, and the emergence of clear demands to counteract the impact of geospatial control.
Speakers:
- Michael Groves – Founder, Resordinate (Host)
- Dr. Cailean Gallagher – Associate Lecturer at University of St Andrews and Co-ordinator of the Workers’ Observator
- Dr. Marion Lieutaud - Lecturer in Social Data Science, The University of Edinburgh
- Mark Smith - Co-founder & Managing Director, Marked
- Garance Locatelli - Co-founder, Marked
Whether it's your first meetup, or you are a regular - we'll have plenty of opportunity for you to connect with your local data & AI community.
As always, there will be pizza and drinks! 🍕🥤
