Talk Abstract

Imagine a world where it is possible to accurately predict the weather, climate, storms, tsunami and other computational intensive problems. Edward Norton Lorenz stated "small causes can have larger effects", the so called butterfly effect. Data assimilation: to catch "small causes" and accurately predict effects.

Speaker Biography

Rosella Arcucci is a Research Associate at the DSI involved in MAGIC project (envisaging a world with greener cities). Her area of expertise is in Numerical Analysis, Scientific Computing and development of methods, algorithms and software for scientific applications on high performance architectures including parallel and distributed computing. She is working on numerical and parallel techniques for solving Data Assimilation models more accurately and efficiently. Efficiency is achieved by virtue of designing models specifically to take full advantage of massively parallel computers and general purpose graphics processing units.
