This course is a comprehensive guide to implementing and managing data protection compliance within an organisation. This course is aimed at individuals who have completed our Intermediate Certificate(or equivalent) or are existing Data Protection Officers/ Information Governance Managers, Data Protection leads and similar professionals. The course builds on existing knowledge to ensure delegates understand in depth the requirements for implementing and managing a successful program of privacy and data protection compliance.

The course content includes:

Session 1: Legislative Framework and Data Protection Officer Role

Legislation Overview: The first part of this course recaps on the legislative framework briefly deep diving on some key elements such as the scope and the data protection principles.

Case Law: It analyses some legal cases and explores how data protection law is reflected in the legal process.

Data Protection Officer Role: This part of the course discusses the role of the Data Protection Officer/Data Protection Lead including responsibilities, when to appoint a DPO and challenges.

Organisational Engagement: Delegates work together to consider how to build relationships and ensure data protection is considered within wider business practices.


Session 2: Policies, Training, and Awareness

Policy Essentials: Identify the essential policies required for compliance and their practical implications.

Training Techniques: Explore effective methods to elevate data protection training and awareness across the organisation.

Knowledge Management: Learn strategies to maintain and update data protection knowledge for practitioners and the wider organisation.


Session 3: Documentation and Accountability

Privacy Framework: Examines key documentation (including Privacy Notices, Records of Processing (ROPA), Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIA) and Legitimate Interests Assessment (LIA) that comprises a privacy framework and connections between key systems and processes.

Accountability Assessment: Considers how to assess accountability within and organisation and how to influence and effect change to make sustainable improvement to organisational compliance.


Session 4: Leadership, Breach Response, and Emerging Issues

Committee Expectations: Discusses the expectations surrounding Committee Structures and the impact of senior leadership.

Crisis Management: Attendees discuss a data breach scenario to learn crisis response and long-term recovery strategies.

  • To comprehend the data protection law and understand how it applies to organisations, including extra territorial applicability under the GDPR.
  • Analyse legal cases or ICO action and apply the learning to attendees organisational strategies.
  • Define the scope of the ICO, its powers for ensuring compliance and enforcement, such as investigation, audit and fines.
  • Evaluate key roles in a successful data protection strategy including Data Protection Officer, Senior Information Risk Owners and the link with senior management.
  • Consider how to build relationships and ensure data protection is considered within wider business practices.
  • Analyse the importance of data protection training and awareness in an organisation.
  • Evaluate documentation which forms part of a privacy framework.
  • Analyse the role of effective leadership and approval in management of privacy risks.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of procurement and due diligence processes.
  • Assess the connections between key systems and processes within a privacy framework.
  • Develop a draft implementation plan for improving privacy and data protection compliance within an organisation.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how data protection legislation applies in real world scenarios.
  • Consider how to influence and effect change to make sustainable improvement to organisational compliance.
  • Estimate an organisations level of compliance and accountability and assess additional relevant measures.
  • Establish and implement Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that drive engagement and facilitate change.
  • To develop skills in immediate response and long-term recovery planning for data protection/breach scenarios.
  • Develop an understanding of emerging trends and broader issues in data protection.
