This full-day, in-person course introduces the core principles of data protection, focusing on the GDPR and the Data Protection (Jersey) Law 2018. It explains how these laws work in practice and highlights the key differences between them, helping you understand how to apply the requirements within your organisation.

The course is designed to give you a solid grounding in GDPR from both a business and technical perspective. It is not intended to be formal legal advice but instead a practical and confidence-building introduction. The training includes six hours of guided learning followed by a one-hour exam.

By the end of the course, you will understand how the GDPR fits within EU law, how it is structured, and the consequences of non-compliance. You will learn what personal data is, why it is protected, and how to identify the scope of the GDPR and the Data Protection (Jersey) Law 2018. You will be able to distinguish between controllers and processors, understand governance arrangements across Member States, and explain the seven core principles and how the accountability requirement operates in practice.

The course also covers the rights of data subjects, the measures needed to ensure data security, and the concepts of data protection by design and by default. You will explore the purpose of DPIAs, the obligations placed on controllers and processors, managing processor relationships, and the role and appointment of a Data Protection Officer. Additional areas include codes of conduct and certification, managing data breaches, notifications to supervisory authorities and individuals, and the rules for international transfers.
