Event description

Description

This course will give an update on the proposed changes to data protection which will become the Data Protection Act 2018 and are the most significant changes in decades. These include the so-called ‘right to be forgotten’ and the creation of a statutory Data Protection Officer.

It will also cover how to deal with requests for information, how to apply exemptions and exceptions and when it matters which legislation you use. It will also take you through how to deal with vexatious requests. Templates for use and practical exercises will help participants to gain confidence and knowledge when faced with tricky requests.

Topics covered will include:

  • The Data Protection Act 2018
  • The new six principles of data protection
  • How to recognise ‘sensitive’ personal data
  • Data security and the most common causes of breaches
  • Dealing with Subject Access Requests
  • The Freedom of Information Act, exemptions and how to apply them
  • The public interest test
  • Environmental Information Regulations, exceptions and how to apply them
  • Vexatious requests
  • Transparency and whether it helps (or not).

The tutor is a solicitor and former Monitoring Officer who has advised and trained on the Freedom of Information Act 2000 from the outset and has had responsibility for compliance with information legislation at both district and unitary councils. She has run her own practice for over six years and advised many authorities on how to deal with vexatious requests.

Registration will commence at 9:30am with the course starting promptly at 10:00am. Refreshments on arrival and a Business Lunch will be served. Parking is available at the Waterside North Pay and Display Car Park adjacent to Judges Lodgings.
