Data Science Challenges in Healthcare with Keith A. Goatman, Jeremy Voisey, Matúš Falis and Owen Anderson from Canon Medical Research Europe

Data-driven approaches have a huge potential to revolutionise healthcare provision and delivery. However, a number of challenges currently limit widespread adoption. This workshop will describe three diverse applications of data science to healthcare and explore some of their associated challenges. The three application areas that will be covered are:

  • Machine understanding of hospital text records
  • Machine learning models for predicting patient outcomes
  • Deep neural networks for image analysis and interpretation.

The workshop will consist of a short introductory talk about each application, followed by a practical demonstration and interactive quiz on the data science challenges associated with each application. This workshop will be of interest to anyone working in this area, as well as to someone just curious about the practical challenges faced when applying data-driven techniques to any sort of healthcare data.

Canon Medical Research Europe develop advanced software for the analysis of healthcare data. Based in Edinburgh the company includes software engineers, AI scientists, image analysis scientists, clinician specialists, researchers and verification engineers who together develop software for Canon Medical’s wide range of medical products. The company has a strong track record of innovation, backed up by a significant number of patents and patents pending.
