Politics is a serious business (and given the stakes this year, deadly serious) but that doesn’t mean it isn’t good for a few laughs. Join Democrats Abroad UK for an evening of pointed humor and sharp satire. Our line-up for the evening:
Nish Kumar is no stranger to the Soho Theatre as his three solo shows - Who Is Nish Kumar? (2012), Nish Kumar Is a Comedian (2013), and 2014’s Ruminations on the Nature of Subjectivity - have all had sold-out runs there. Alongside his flourishing stand-up career, Nish has made television appearances on Q.I., Mock The Week & Live At The Apollo (all BBC Two), Have I Got News For You & The John Bishop Show (BBC One), 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown (Channel 4), Russell Howard’s Stand-Up for Central, Drunk History, The Alternative Comedy Experience and Live At The Comedy Store (all Comedy Central), and Alan Davies As Yet Untitled (Dave). Exciting developments in radio include taking up the reins as the new co-host of BBC Radio 4 Extra’s topical comedy show Newsjack as well as recording his own topical pilot show, Spotlight Tonight, for Radio 4.
Gráinne Maguire is a stand-up comedian, comedy writer, and political commentator who hosts monthly topical comedy night What Has The News Ever Done For Me?, has written extensively for topical comedy shows including Breaking The News, The Now Show, and Channel 4’s Alternative Election Night, and has appeared as a commentator on The Daily Politics and Question Time. She also wrote and starred in the Radio 4 sitcom 28 Dates Later and has brought three shows - We Need to Talk About Bonnets, Where Are All the Fun Places and Are Lots of People There Having More Fun? and Grainne Maguire's One Hour All Night Election Show to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
Viv Groskop is a stand-up comedian, writer and presenter, whose last two Edinburgh shows have sold out and received five-star reviews. She regularly appears on BBC Radio 4 shows such as Loose Ends, Quote Unquote, Woman’s Hour, and Saturday Live and is a contributor to the Guardian, the Evening Standard, and the Daily Mail, among other publications. As part of her book tour for her comedy memoir I Laughed, I Cried - the story of her attempt to perform 100 gigs in 100 consecutive nights - she performed to US audiences in Atlanta and in Washington DC, where she was hailed as “the natural successor to Hyacinth Bucket."
Erich McElroy our MC and token American, has appeared on BBC Breakfast, Newsnight, Sky News and Five News, as well as talking comedy and politics on BBC 5 Live, BBC Surrey, BBC Berkshire, TalkRadio, in addition to playing playing live shows at venues up and down the UK. His most recent Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the tastefully-entitled (US) Electile Dysfunction, received numerous four and five-star reviews.
All money raised will fund Democrats Abroad UK’s get out the vote operation, including office space for our campaign team here in the UK (now that's something to smile about).
About the Venue: Drinks and snacks will be available for purchase in the room. The Soho Theatre complex includes a bar that offers bar meals.
Age Guidance: 16+ (Any minor must be accompanied by a responsible adult. And this is pretty adult humour, so mom and dad ... you have been warned.)
This event sold out in 2012 - don’t delay!
