Event description

Description

DJ/writer Dave Haslam will be reading from and discussing his new book; entitled 'Sonic Youth Slept on My Floor; Music, Manchester & More', a memoir of his life and work in some of the most interesting corners of contemporary culture, which includes encounters with inspiring characters including Tony Wilson, Nile Rodgers, Terry Hall, Neneh Cherry, Tracey Thorn, John Peel, Mark E Smith, Ian Brown, and John Lydon.

Morrissey comes to tea; he meets writers including Raymond Carver and Jonathan Franzen; he discusses masturbation with Viv Albertine; he has a gun pulled on him at the Hacienda, a drug dealer threatens to slit his throat; and Sonic Youth sleep on his floor.

In the late 1970s, he was a teenage John Peel listener and Joy Division fan. In 2017, four decades later, he works with New Order on a series of five live shows in Manchester. Haslam tells the story of those decades, including the impact of life-shaking events (from the nightmare of the Yorkshire Ripper to the shock of the Manchester Arena terror attack).

Dave will be reading from his book, talking about some of the stories he tells, and holding a Q&A session with the audience.

DJ and writer Dave Haslam made his DJing debut at the Hacienda in 1986. He played there almost five hundred times; including on the final night of the club in 1997. He also played with the Stone Roses at their legendary gigs in Blackpool and at Spike Island. He has since DJ'd worldwide, including Paris, Detroit, Berlin, New York, Lima, Geneva; and at afterparties for New Order, Gorillaz, and Depeche Mode. His journalism has appeared in 'NME', 'Les Inrocks' (France), ‘The Guardian, ‘The New Statesman’, and the ‘London Review of Books’. ‘Sonic Youth Slept on My Floor’ is his fifth book.

Due to the size and nature of the venue, numbers are limited to just 30 people, so this is sure to be an intimate and entertaining night.
