David Cohen and Alissa Firsova: Rachmaninov, Prokofiev and Shostakovich
Overview
In this concert three of the 20th Century most celebrated Russian composers Rachmaninov, Prokofiev and Shostakovoich will be interpreted by the distinguished cellist David Cohen, currently Principal Solo Cellist of the London Symphony Orchestra, together with a wonderful pianist and gifted composer Alissa Firsova.
Dmitri Shostakovich composed his Cello Sonata op. 40 in 1934 during a period of emotional turemoil in his life.
Sonata in C major by Sergei Prokofiev was written in 1949 for cellist Mstislav Rostropovich and pianist Sviatoslav Richter.
"Vocalise" is a song by Sergei Rachmaninov, composed and publ;ished in 1915 as the last of his 14 Songs or 14 Romances, Op. 34. Originally written for Soprano with piano accompaniment.
