David Crystal is a globally recognised linguist, author, editor, and academic. After studying here at UCL between 1959-1962, he lectured at Bangor and Reading University where he began developing his research and career as the prominent linguist we recognise today. David has authored, co-authored, and edited over 120 books on a variety of subjects, including ‘The gift of the gab’, ‘Internet Linguistics’, ‘How Language Works’, and ‘The stories of English to name a few’.

More recently, David has focussed on how the internet and texting impact the English language, and how attitudes to these mediums shift and develop within society. The concept of English as a global language has also been a topic of interest to him, topics that he continues to share as he lectures budding linguists and learners of English around the world. Appearing on BBC Radio, podcasts, and other international platforms such as the Edinburgh Book Festival, David has reached millions of people with his descriptive approach to language and continues to contribute significantly to the field of linguistics.
