David & Goliath: Exploring Greece & Italy
Event Information
About this event
From the first moment the Greeks staked their vines on Italy's southern peninsula, the vinous fate of these two countries has been intertwined. The early Greek colonies in Sicily and Puglia were responsible for the widespread cultivation of the vine on the Latin peninsula, but the student soon eclipsed the master.
From the Roman first growths – wines like Falernum – which were more famous than the Greek wines that preceded them, to the modern Super Tuscans and cult Barolo, Italy has accelerated to become the most significant fine wine producer after France.
Greece, on the other hand, is just emerging as a modern winemaking nation in the wider consciousness of enlightened UK wine drinkers, producing a plethora of brilliant wines from native varieties. Tonight we put them side by side to see what they have in common, and what they can offer that is truly unique.
Our instore tastings start at 7.30pm and run for approximately one-and-a-half to two hours. We will taste 6-8 wines on a theme, and bread, cheese and charcuterie is provided to match with the wines. Due to the communal nature of the tasting, we are unable to cater for dietary requirements.
