Event description
We are very excited to be offering two creatively invigorating and complimentary David Hockney classes!

About this event

“I believe that the very process of looking can make a thing beautiful.”

- Hockney

In this two-part look at David Hockney’s incredible canon of work, LDG tutors Frances and Lucy will guide you in exploring two distinct themes present in Hockney's paintings and drawings; landscapes in the outside world and the closer, more intimate spaces of portraits of people in their homes.

These two areas of work demonstrate the breadth of his artistic enquiry, his versatility and playful experimentation across painting and drawing techniques and will give you an opportunity to discover many different approaches that you can utilise when drawing various subjects, both indoors and out!

We will be delving into his world of dense woods, Yorkshire’s countryside, double portraits and stylishly decorated 1970’s interiors, all depicted with a range of styles, from natural realism to expressive abstraction.

For this first Hockney session, tutor Frances Stanfield will be guiding you through Hockney’s process and ways of working with large scale paintings and detailed landscapes, often fragmenting and breaking them down, often using photography to capture numerous viewpoints.

Hockney is a prolific artist and describes his job as ‘picture maker’ - a humble description for one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century. Across his 60 year career he has created thousands of drawings, painting, prints, collages and artist books. He is a renowned draftsman but has explored many different mediums which often feed into his paintings and drawings.

YOU WILL NEED:

  • 12 x pieces of paper (preferably A3/A2 but any size will do)

Organiser LONDON DRAWING GROUP

Organiser of DAVID HOCKNEY ONLINE: Drawing Outside

The London Drawing Group is a collective of three contemporary artists currently practising in London. Although our practices are individually varied and diverse, we are brought together by our shared love of and passion for drawing, and our experiences of being taught by a huge range of practising artists at the Royal Drawing School Central.

Our aim as a collective is simply to get more people drawing, making, connecting and engaging with art. We genuinely believe that art is for everyone, and that sometimes the only thing keeping people from engaging in the playful, unknown and unpredictable process of art-making, is that it can seem intimidating. Through working to break down contextual barriers through innovative methods of teaching and creating, we hope to make drawing approachable to everyone.
