Join us for an online sketchbook class inspired by the iconic work of David Hockney. We’ll explore his playful approaches to seeing and recording the world around us, from luminous landscapes to colourful everyday moments.
Frances will guide you through a series of sketchbook-based exercises, introducing simple but effective watercolour techniques to help bring your pages alive. If you don’t have watercolours or ink, don’t worry-everything can also be done with just a pencil. The aim is to explore, experiment, and find new ways of capturing your surroundings in the spirit of Hockney’s joyful curiosity.
Whether you’re brand new to sketchbooks or a seasoned artist looking for fresh inspiration, this session will be welcoming, practical, and fun.
Suggested Materials(Don’t worry if you don’t have everything listed. Join with whatever you’ve got! You may want to try new materials after watching the class, and you’ll have 14 days of recording access to revisit anything.)
- A Pencil
- A Sketchbook (new or ongoing!) If you are going to use wet materials, be aware that some paper doesn't take water very well. Test the paper before the class if you're unsure :)
If you don't have a sketchbook you can just use any paper you have - for example, cartridge or watercolour paper will work well.
Ideally:
- Watercolours + a brush
- A pot for water to clean your brush
- Tissue or Kitchen Roll for drying your brush
Optional:
- Inks
- Any other materials you would personally like to experiment with!
This class is suitable for all levels from complete beginners to practicing artists
