David Oluwale's Leeds - with Joe Williams and poets
Date and time
Joe Williams tells the story of David Oluwale, showing some of the places where he enjoyed himself, slept rough, and where he was drowned
About this event
Find out more about David Oluwale's time in Leeds (1949-69). Joe Williams, creator of @HeritageWalker in Leeds, first produced this event for the David Oluwale Memorial Association in 2019 and we had a waitng list for places on the walk. This time, Covid regulations right now mean we can only have 30. (This might change, so apply to the reserve list.)
Join us to learn about African civilisation, colonial history, and to walk Leeds city centre and see the locations where, from 1949 to 1953, David Oluwale would have a drink and dance at The Mecca with his West African friends. You'll see some of the doorways in which he slept in the 1960s after he was let out of High Royds Psychiatric Hospital. And we'll look at the spot near Leeds Bridge where we believe Inspector Ellerker and Sergeant Kitching caused him to drown in the River Aire on 18th April 1969.
The attached video was made during part of the 2019 walk, when #JuwonOgungbe sang his specially-written songs. Juwon isn't available this time -- instead, the tour will be animated by poetry from #IanDuhig, #AsherJael and #AbdullahAdekola. (#MichelleScallyClarke apologises for being unable to perform as previously advertised.) Please book now to avoid disappointment -- We'll give you a copy of our specially-designed map of David's places in Leeds as well. (Note: we will assemble outside Leeds Library - venue info below.)
The event will comply with Covid regulations and everyone will be issued with earpods so they can maintain social distancing while hearing Joe's talks and the poets' contributions. We are very grateful to #SlungLowTheatre @SlungLow for the tech support for this event.
And DOMA is also very grateful for the funding support for this event awarded by the Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society. Follow it on Twitter @LeedsPhilandLit
