David Owens: Property and Authority
Wed 22 March 2017, 17:30 – 19:00 GMT
We are pleased to announce that Professor David Owens of King's College London will present "Property and Authority":
"It has been argued that personal property rights are to be justified by reference to the interest potential owners have in controlling things that matter to them. The first part of the paper develops one form of this view and highlights its theoretical merits. I then raise some problems for the view and suggest an alternative, one based on the idea that human beings have an interest in controlling their normative situation."
Professor Owens came to King’s after teaching Philosophy at Sheffield University and Reading University. He has also held visiting appointments at All Souls College, Oxford, Yale University, London University, Sydney University, New York University and the Lublin University. His most recent book, Shaping the Normative Landscape, focuses on blame, wronging and obligation and their involvement in forgiveness, friendship, promising and consent.
