Professor Jon Keating, FRS is one of the foremost mathematicians in the UK. He was until recently the President of the London Mathematical Society and is currently the Sedleian Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of Oxford, where he is also a Fellow of The Queen's College.
Professor Keating has wide-ranging interests that cover both fundamental mathematics and its applications. In his lecture, he will discuss what has been called the unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics, describing situations where mathematics has had profoundly important applications to science and technology that were unanticipated at the time it was created.
