Day 1 - An Introduction to Log Conversion & Green Oak Framing - Folkestone

We're happy to annouce another fantastic course funded by Townscape Heritage Initiative National Lottery.
This is a one day practical course based at East Kent College, Folkestone campus.
It's split into AM & PM sessions for homeowners, estate owners, professionals, builders and craftsmen at all levels to gain "hands-on" experience in how logs are converted/merchandised using a mobile sawmill. You will also look into how this translates into usable replacement/new components to repair and maintain old buildings.
*A mobile woodmizer LT20 Diesel, hydraulic will be used on the day.
AM session- Log Conversion
Covers a general overview of logging, sawmilling, the history and usage. Operation of a portable sawmill, log types, cutting patterns yield, conversion, seasoning & applications.
- How to operate a mill
- Log selection and positioning on mill
- Stacking techniques for sawn timber seasoning
- Moisture content testing/monitoring
PM session- Traditional Green Oak Framing
Covers the fundamental aspects of framing, the history and usage, selecting timber, grade, making joints, pegs and assembly.
- Selection of timber & tools
- Preparation and marking out
- Making various timber joint types with hand tools
- Use of a chain mortiser
- Making of pegs for joints
- Assembly of joints/structure
*All tools, materials, safety goggles and gloves are provided but we ask for all delegates to wear suitable clothing and footwear and lunch is provided. Please contact us if you have any food requirements/allergies.
