Event description

Description

These events are free, and open to everyone interested in strengthening contemporary visual art in Lorne (north Argyll) and its neighbouring areas.

Each of the two days is organised to be a whole event in itself, but please join us for both days so you can meet more people and contribute to the discussions as they develop.

The events are devised by Deirdre MacKenna as part of the Locating Lorne programme and will

  • introduce some of the artists, living locally and elsewhere, who are currently undertaking research for the 'Locating Lorne' programme which will be developed in 2018, and
  • explore how artists, architects, planners, curators, publishers and others have used visual imagery to frame their ideas about Scotland in the past.

Collaborating with Deirdre on these events, artist Laura Donkers will respond to the presentations and dialogues which develop.

Please see Saturday 25 November - for information of Day 1 which explores historical representations of the Scottish landscape and the influence these have had upon perceptions of Scotland’s rural identity.

Day 2 - Saturday 02 December, from 10am to 4pm:

Diverse approaches to visual art practices in Scotland today:

10am – The day will start with a summary of the presentations and discussion from 25 November by Laura Donkers and Deirdre MacKenna and followed by presentations from

Nina Bacos

Nina Bacos is a practicing artist working mainly with photography; she holds a PhD from Glasgow School of Art and is a visiting lecturer at Duncan of Jordnastone College of Art and Design (University of Dundee). She initiated and manages the TalkSee Photography programme and is co-edits NOTES, which re-launched in 2016. Nina will discuss her motivations for devising the TalkSee programme and the new editorial approach to NOTES Journal, and how these relate to her artistic practice.

Rhona Dougall

Rhona Dougall has been developing community arts programmes, projects, events and activities since a student at University of Glasgow, and while working for refugee support projects in Glasgow and Gaelic language initiatives in Lochaber. She will present the programme she has developed as Arts Co-ordinator for The Rockfield Centre, a new, community owned cultural space in her home town of Oban.

11.30 – short break

11.45am

Daniele Sambo

With his background originally in Architecture, Daniele’s interest shifted to photography and its role as a vehicle for representing change through documentation.

Since arriving in Scotland from Italy in 2010, Daniele has undertaken many projects which represent the communal areas of our built environments such as gardens and community halls. He will discuss his approach to specific projects including Nature, Light and Truth (2016), A Walk in the Park (2014) and Exposito in (2010).

Deirdre MacKenna and Laura Donkers will summarise the presentations of Day 1 and Day 2.

13.00 - a light lunch snack will be provided at The Locating Lorne Studio, where there will be an opportunity to learn about The Rockfield Centre and the Oban Communities Trust. (There are many options for hot snacks, soup and full meals elsewhere in central Oban if preferred),

14.00 - Laura Donkers will present a summary of her observations of the discussions and points raised, followed by group discussion with speakers and audience.
