Description

Day 2 Tuesday 21st May 2019

Aimed at School Leaders

The conference will explore the social, emotional and mental health situation within our schools and communities and what we can do to foster a climate that is healthy for both learners and staff. West Yorkshire has a strong tradition of proactively looking at the holistic needs of its children and young people and in the current climate this is becoming a priority. As a group of local ITT providers and teaching schools, we feel the need to address the local and regional situation regarding the mental health and well being of all the school community, not just the children and young people. The conference will bring together a range of highly qualified educational, wellbeing and mental health specialists and agencies who will deal with the situation from both a research based perspective and on a practical level. Professor Jonathan Glazzard will open the conference and a series of workshops will draw on the expertise of professionals who can offer practical tips as well as signpost support for developing a culture that supports everyone, including staff. The day has been designed to support those in leadership roles, HR and staff who support SEMH to implement a whole school strategy to promote mental health and wellbeing.

Key note speaker - Professor Jonathan Glazzard

Professor Jonathan Glazzard currently leads on research in The Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health in Schools. Prior to his appointment at Leeds Beckett University Jonathan led Initial Teacher Education programmes in the primary phase at the University of Huddersfield from 2005-15. In 2015 he was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship for recognition of his contribution to learning and teaching in higher education. From 2015-17 Jonathan worked at Leeds Trinity University in a cross-institutional role which required him to lead innovations in learning, teaching and assessment. In 2016 he was awarded a Principal Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy for his strategic contribution to learning and teaching. Professor Glazzard works closely with primary and secondary schools to look at creating a culture of positive mental health and has recently had several books published such as ‘Positive Mental Health: A Whole School Approach’, ‘Meeting the Mental Health Needs of children 4 – 11 Years’ and ‘Meeting the Mental Health Needs of Learners 11 – 18 Years’.
