Day class for beginners

Learn to strip, pad, and cover a dining chair and make minor repairs. Work on your own chair with David’s guidance while he demonstrates techniques.

Please bring your own dining chair. During this class, David will show restoration and upholstery techniques and you work on your own chair under supervision and guidance.

  • Learn how to strip, pad, and cover
  • Learn how to make minor repairs
  • Learn how to use upholstery tools and materials
  • Refinishing techniques discussed

What is the difference between this and the half-day class?

With the half-day class, you bring your own dining chair or if you wish David can provide you with a seat to work on. The half-day class is for removable Slip Seats only and no repair work is done, only the strip and re-cover of the slip seat.

This full-day class is a full on (dismantle if necessary) repair shop style of class, repairing broken joints and reassembly.

Recovering chairs with non-removable seats i.e. webbing that is attached to the frame, new foam, wadding, fabric and applying gimp (trim) and or upholstery nails.

Not all chairs require all of the above but they require more time and effort than is allowed for in a half-day session.

What do we need to bring?

  • A dining chair to work on
  • If you wish to replace the fabric or foam components of your chair:
  • FABRIC – HALF A SQUARE METRE FOR A STANDARD SIZE DINING CHAIR
  • FOAM 450 X 450 IN SIZE EITHER 25MM OR 50MM THICK DEPENDING ON YOUR CHOICE
  • CALICO, DACRON, COTTON WADDING OR POLYESTER LINING TO COVER THE FOAM
  • NEW WEBBING (IF THE CHAIR IS WEBBED AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED) we always recommend replacing the webbing at this stage.

WE STOCK THE ABOVE ITEMS (APART FROM THE FABRIC WHICH WILL BE YOUR CHOICE) THEY CAN BE PURCHASED ON THE DAY IF YOU DON’T HAVE YOUR OWN.

General information for your visit.

Please wear clothes suitable for dusty work, sensible shoes and bring your own lunch. Please wear warm clothes in the winter. The workshop can feel very cold due to the concrete floors in the building. There is a local shop nearby if you wish to buy lunch or you can bring a packed lunch with you. Tea and coffee is provided throughout the day.

If you have some of your own tools and would like to learn how to use them properly, then you are welcome to bring them and use them on the course. We have a fully equipped workshop so there is no need to bring anything, but some students like to bring their own.
