Event description

Description

There is a growing and developing movement across the UK , in the number of initiatives which contribute towards demystifying and breaking the taboo that still exists on talking around death and dying. Last year, we held an event during which we hosted talks from professionals in the field, about self care , Arts & Media in the death & dying industry. We also ran a "death cafe" which was very much enjoyed by the students and staff. This was our a starting point for our shared community and creating a dialogue on the topic.

This year we will explore the themes inspired by the traditional Mexican festival the “Day of the Dead” where people remember those they have lost and honour them by celebrating the place they played in their lives.

Organised by the School Health and Society depts of Nursing and Counselling and Psychotherapy it aims to raise awareness of the issues surrounding the end of life and grief and loss.

We invite staff, students and industry representatives to hear talks from and network with:

  • green funeral directors,
  • humanist funeral celebrants,
  • user and carer representatives,
  • clinical health and social care staff
  • bereavement support services from the public and private sector,
  • faith and cultural leaders,
  • sociologists
  • hospices

The event also hopes to provide a space for creative activities such as letter writing, poetry, music and performance all with the aim of opening a dialogue around death and dying, debunking myths and challenging social and cultural taboo’s.
