The Instituto Cervantes in Manchester, in collaboration with Ana Hurtado, invites you to a special evening to celebrate the Day of the Dead.
Recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, this Mexican tradition brings together families and friends around an altar to honour and remember loved ones who have passed away.
Celebrated on 31 October, 1 and 2 November, the Day of the Dead coincides with All Saints’ Day in the Roman Catholic calendar. Customs associated with the celebration include creating private altars known as ofrendas, and paying tribute to the deceased with calaveras (skulls), candles, marigolds, and their favourite food and drink.
On 31 October, we will unveil the altar specially created for display at the Instituto Cervantes. Ana Hurtado will offer a brief talk on the origins and significance of this tradition, followed by a screening of the short film La Llorona and a tasting of pan de muerto.
