Event description

Description

A day school to raise awareness of Birmingham Cathedral’s fundraising appeal (Divine Beauty) to restore and celebrate Edward Burne-Jones’s stained glass windows. Made by William Morris & Co, these windows represent the very best of Victorian stained glass, but at 130 years old their condition is now deteriorating.

All profits from this day school will be donated to the Appeal.

  • Katherine Hinzman (PhD candidate at the University of York) will summarise Burne-Jones’ background, including his early days in Birmingham;
  • Dr Laura MacCulloch (Royal Holloway University) will look at his drawings;
  • Madeline Emerald Thiele (PhD student at Aberystwyth University) will outline his work and the construction of the Pre-Raphaelite Angel;
  • Dr Jim Cheshire will discuss Burne-Jones’s stained glass;
  • Dr Rachel Sloan (Courtauld Institute) will consider the continuing legacy and influences of his work.

After the Day School William Walters and Alastair Carew-Cox will lead a guided tour of the cathedral windows. Limited bookings for this additional session on a first received basis.
