Event description
A ‘close reading’ of a singular film by the Polish filmmaker Krzysztof Kieslowski.

About this Event

This Day School offers the chance to participate in a ‘close reading’ of a singular film by the Polish filmmaker Krzysztof Kieslowski, A Double Life of Véronique (France-Poland 1991). Kieslowski began as a documentarist in Poland in 1969 and it wasn’t until the late 1980s that he became well-known in the West. His four films (this one plus the 'Three Colours Trilogy') made as French co-productions between 1991 and 1994 before his early death in 1996 made him a director-star of European art cinema.

We’ll work through scenes from the film together to create a broad understanding of the achievements of this writer-director and his principal collaborators, the writer Krzysztof Piesiewicz, composer Zbigniew Preisner, cinematographer Slawomir Idziak and film editor Jacques Witta.

A Double Life of Véronique, as the title implies, brings together two seemingly separate stories about two identical young women (both played by Irene Jacob) and explores them cinematically through music, imagery, performance and editing.

Tea and coffee are available in the Mechanics Institute Library. There are places nearby to buy lunch but you are also welcome to bring your own.
