Event description

Description

The Islands Book Trust had planned a boat trip to Scarp last September. Unfortunately, that trip had to be cancelled due to unfavourable weather conditions. We realise that many people were disappointed when last year’s trip was cancelled. So, we plan to try again on 12 May! We have organised a number of boat trips to Scarp in recent years and they have always been very popular. Hopefully, those of you who were unable to get to Scarp last year will join us this year, along with others who are interested in the island.

Scarp is a a small island off the north west tip of Harris. The island, once supported some 200 residents but has been without permanent habitation since 1970. There are ruins of many of the residents houses while some have been preserved and serve as holiday houses. The island is like the rest of Harris in that it is very rocky with sparse vegetation and a lack of trees. The main habitation on Scarp was centered around an area of flat ground suitable for cultivation on the Hushinish side. A shallow, narrow channel separates the island from Harris, it is frequently impassable due to strong currents.

Scarp was the site of an experimental Rocket Post service. Though unsuccessful it is still well remembered and was the subject of a film. The day the rocket was first launched, 28 July 1934, became known as Latha na Rocait.
