What will be covered?

This is a TWO-PART series, and by signing up on this page you are expected to attend BOTH parts.

Deaccessioning and disposal occur as part of responsible collections management, in the context of a museum’s collections development policy.

Tuesday 2 December - Part 1 - The procedure

This first session will focus on the Spectrum 5.1 Deaccessioning and disposal procedure. We will review policy considerations, Spectrum requirements and suggested procedure. We will also signpost to guidance and toolkits for methods of disposal, decision-making and documentation.

At the end of the session Katy Cornforth, Apprentice Curator at the Farmland Museum in Cambridgeshire, will share the excellent work that they have been doing on a shoestring budget. This will help to demonstrate the procedure in a practical sense.

Tuesday 9 December - Part 2 - Disposals in Practice

This second session will look at practical ways to implement the Spectrum Deaccessioning and disposal procedure, and disposals more broadly. Sarah Briggs, from the Museums Association will present on the Off the Shelf toolkit. This will be followed by time for questions about the toolkit.

The second part of the session will be a scenario-based activity. Participants will be presented with a disposal scenario, and in groups will work through each of the different stages of disposal, including identifying objects for disposal, preparing for a disposal, how to communicate the disposal and how to actively dispose of objects. Participants will also be presented with a second scenario to compare and contrast, followed by time for questions.

There will opportunities to discuss with colleagues and ask questions throughout both sessions.

Format

This session is workshop style with opportunities to ask questions throughout. There will be a 10 minute break around 3pm.
