Deaf Awareness and Inclusion in the Workplace

1. Understanding Deafness and basic BSL introduction ;
Learn basic concepts of deafness and hearing loss, common misconceptions and stereotypes, how it can affect communication in the workplace. We will cover simple greetings and phrases relevant to a workplace or professional setting as well as, key vocabulary for meetings, introductions, and daily interactions.

2. Inclusive Communication Strategies and practical workplace scenarios ;
Learn how to communicate effectively with deaf colleagues or clients, tips for meetings, emails, and phone/video calls and the importance of visual cues, clear speech, and patience.

3. Promoting an Inclusive Culture ;
Look at why inclusion matters for team morale and performance, encouraging apprentices to be proactive allies and resources for continued learning in BSL and deaf awareness.

Panellists

Anthony Sinclair has been teaching sign language related programmes for over 15 years. His work is his campaign. He has pioneered teaching sign language through movement and play to children up to 11 years old and extends this work into secondary schools by providing interactive and engaging classes to students.

Anthony believes that knowing sign language can open up many opportunities for people and introducing a bilingual language model as early as possible will only serve to make us a better, inclusive and smarter society. He wants to reach as many people as possible in his campaign to #normaliseknowingsign.

Who is this suitable for?

This is suitable for Kaplan apprentices, Kaplan UK students, Kaplan staff, and any employers who want to join. We have a limit of available places, which will be allocated on a first come first-served basis. We look forward to seeing you all there!

Joining the webinar

Upon signing up through Eventbrite, you'll receive a confirmation email which will direct you to a Zoom link where the session will be hosted. Use this link to join at the scheduled time. The link will also be sent again as a reminder two days, and 2 hours, before the webinar. This event will be run as a Zoom meeting with one way video and audio (the hosts’). The session will be recorded.

Webinar Recording

This webinar will be hosted on Zoom and will be recorded, along with any participant questions, however, images of participants will not be captured on the recording. You may choose what name you wish to be visible. Once you have registered for the webinar we will send a calendar invite to your email address and email you reminders about the upcoming event. After the event, we will email all participants with a copy of the recording and further relevant information including a request for feedback.
