The purpose of the training is to provide you with tools and techniques to be deaf aware so that if/when a deaf young person comes through the doors of where you work you feel confident that you can communicate with them and know what to do when communication breaks down. We’ll provide you with tips, hints, strategies and stories. You’ll hear from personal experience about the communication barriers that young people face. Overall, you’ll know what you can do to support a deaf young person who wants information and guidance from you.
1. To understand different levels of deafness; 2. To be able to describe the different communication choices for deaf people and how to use them; 3. To understand and be able to adapt environmental issues affecting communication; 4. To develop and be able to use some effective communication tactics for use with deaf people; 5. To be able to fingerspell the alphabet (and words), sign numbers and basic greetings in British Sign Language.
