Description

The National Deaf Children’s Society is running a Deaflympics Swimming Celebration Day.

Deaf young people will meet role models in swimming and take part in a fun pool session. The GB Deaf Swimming team will come along to talk about their experiences in swimming, show pictures, videos and medals and sign kit. We will then head to the pool for games and races with the Deaflympians!

Communication support with be provided and the event is free for deaf children and their families to attend.

FAQs

What age is this event suitable for?

Deaf young people of all ages are welcome to attend - we recommend that the day is most suitable for 8 - 16 year olds.

Is this event suitable for non-swimmers?

We recommend that to take part in the pool session, young people are able to swim 25 metres+ unaided (one length of a swimming pool). Non-swimmers are very welcome to attend the kit signing and talk from the Deaflympians.

Can hearing siblings attend?

Yes! Hearing siblings are welcome to attend.

Do parents / carers need to go in the water?

No, parents do not go in the water for this event. The children will be supervised in the water by the NDCS team and the pool lifeguards.

Do parents / carers need to stay on site?

Yes. Unfortunately the NDCS team cannot take responsibility for medication or valuables while the children are swimming, so we ask that parents / carers stay on site throughout the event.

What do I need to bring?

  • Swimming costume / trunks
  • Towel
  • Locker money (20p or £1 coins)

Optional:

  • Goggles
  • Swimming hat
  • Shampoo and shower gel
  • Camera
  • Kit for the Deaflympians to sign e.g. swimming hat / t-shirt / kick board

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Manchester Aquatics Centre is easy to reach by train, Oxford Road station is a 10 minute walk and Manchester Piccadilly is a 15 minute walk away. Car parking is available at the centre, including designated disabled spaces. Bike storage is also available. Manchester Aquatics Centre is on the following bus routes: 15, 16, 18, 38, 41, 42, 42A, 43, 44, 111, 142, 143, 147, 157, 191.
